Everybody loves the sight of a well-manicured lawn. A well-tended yard is inviting, easy on the eyes, and could significantly add to your property’s value if you’re selling. However, as most experienced homeowners will tell you, keeping your grass healthy while still keeping it tidy can take a significant effort, especially when you’re still starting out.
At the same time, many people assume that caring for their yard is just about seeding and occasionally mowing when it grows. In the end, they frustrate themselves with settling for a dead an unmanageable yard.
In this article, we will share four lawn care tips for a healthier and greener lawn:
Remember not to merely seed your lawn and hope it grows. While some species will thrive in even the most inhospitable environments, you will want to give your grass the best chance of growing.
Most grass will survive in soil with a pH level of 6 to 6.5. This means that your soil needs to be slightly acidic to encourage growth. You can test your soil’s pH level by taking a soil sample and having it tested by a service, or you can use a pH testing kit by yourself. Alternatively, you can also use a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar.
If your soil turns out to be too alkaline (pH level higher than 7), you can raise the acidity by adding peat moss or acidifying fertilizers.
Weeds are almost impossible to keep off any lawn, but you should at least take care not to plant them in the first place. This allows you to differentiate the colour and shape of the grass you planted from the weed that will eventually grow alongside them. This way, you’ll be able to spot them more easily and remove them.
To do this, try to inspect the bag of grass seed and look for those labelled 0% weed seed and 0% other crops.
While you will eventually have to trim your grass, try not to overdo it by cutting them too close to the ground. You want your grass to be able to survive and keep your yard green. Cutting off too much grass blade will limit their ability to absorb sunlight and perform photosynthesis, eventually killing them. It is recommended that you keep your mower height to at least seven centimetres above ground to give your grass enough leeway for sustained growth.
Timing matters, even in caring for your yard. The rule of the green thumb is to water between 6 am to 10 am. This allows your grass ample time to absorb the water, and still have enough time for evaporation to get rid of excess moisture during the day. Doing this any later, such as in the midday, is inefficient because the sweltering sun will evaporate the water before your grass can absorb them, and doing it at night will invite fungal growth because of the excess water that’s allowed to linger.
Although lawn care is not rocket science, it shouldn’t be taken lightly as well. By following the easy-to-do tips given above, you’ll witness a lush and green lawn for you and your family to enjoy in no time.
