Lawn Maintenance: 4 Things to Check & What They Mean

Your lawn is a vast expanse of green grasses that can easily take your property’s curb appeal up a notch, but it can still offer more than that. It can even beautify your residence and serve as a recreational spot for you, your family, and even your guests! However, keep in mind that the lawn requires constant care and attention for it to maintain its appeal. By failing to do so, grasses will eventually start to grow and become unhealthy and unsightly.

In this article, we will share four key things you must check on your lawn and what they mean:

1. Dry grass

There is nothing more alarming about your yard's well-being than seeing dry grasses all around. What does it mean? It only means one thing—they are thirsty because you don’t water them regularly. The heat also has serious repercussions on your turf during hot days and summer months. The last thing you’ll ever want to happen is for them to wilt and eventually die. So, the best way to spring them back to life is to get those sprinklers working to quench their thirst!

2. Mushroom presence

If you start seeing mushrooms on your lawn, be wary. Your yard is probably too moist to the point that it starts allowing fungi to grow, which usually happens during the rainy season. While watering your grasses is a must, keeping them wet and drowning is a big no-no. For this reason, the best thing to do is to cut back your watering routine and keep your lawn a bit dry, especially during this wet season. Eventually, this will discourage the mushrooms from growing!

3. Brown spots

Your lawn is supposed to be green all throughout the year. But if you start seeing irregular brown patches, there’s only one culprit: a grub problem. These white, beetle-like insects in the larvae stage love to feed on the roots of grasses, and as a result, the grass will begin to wilt and eventually die. There are a handful of ways to get rid of these pesky critters, one of which is to apply nematodes or milky spore on the brown spots. Eventually, these pests will die, and your grasses will begin to grow.

4. Dark green to pale yellow lawn

As mentioned, your yard must be looking fresh and green at all times. But nothing is more alarming than seeing your grasses turning dark green or, worst, pale yellow. When this happens, your lawn is probably experiencing chlorosis, meaning that it lacks nitrogen. In other words, your grasses are hungry. To address this problem, all you have to do is apply some fertilizer, but be sure it is organic and doesn’t have harmful chemicals!

At this point, you now know what to be on the lookout for, as far as your lawn is concerned—dry grass, mushroom presence, brown spots, and dark green to pale yellow yard. Most importantly, you know what they mean and what you need to do, so be sure to follow some of our tips discussed above.

While maintaining your lawn helps, it’s best to hire a professional lawn maintenance service provider to take good care of it as well. Ultimately, these professionals will ensure that your grasses will remain healthy, visually appealing, and green all year round!
