4 Tips to Care for Your Lawn During the Summer - Our Guide

With summer on the horizon, it’s high time to bring out the sunscreen and cookout gear for your annual summer kickoff. But with the rise in temperature comes more challenges in caring for your garden and lawn. Now that it’s hotter and drier, you’ll want to make sure your lawn stays lush, green, and healthy as long as possible.

Even with more difficult temperatures, keeping your lawn neat and thriving is completely feasible. Here are some tips to help you maintain your lawn during the hot temperatures of summer:

Regularly Inspect Your Mower

It’s always important to maintain and inspect your lawnmower. Even if your lawnmower is state-of-the-art and promises zero upkeep and maintenance, it’s still worth a check to make sure it’s properly working. Otherwise, it might not give you the cut you’ve been expecting. A blade that’s grown dull will give a ragged appearance to your grass, and even give it an unsightly brown colour!

Maintaining your lawnmower, especially to check the sharpness of its blade, should be done at the start of the season. If not, then it’s never too late to have it checked. Your blade may be due for sharpening or a replacement, especially if it’s bent or chipped.

Trim Moderately

Similarly to cutting your grass with a dull blade, trimming it too short will also cause it to brown. If you cut your grass to a considerable height, around 2.5 to 3 inches, then your grass will grow green and healthy. Longer grass also helps trap moisture in the soil since it shields it from the sun. This will also discourage the growth of any weed seeds, which will help maintain the appearance of your lawn.

This also has another important benefit: keeping your grass at that height means that you’ll mow it less frequently. Due to the hot and dry conditions of summer, your grass will take a bit longer to grow. Since it’s more beneficial to leave it at a certain height, that means fewer chores for you!

Water Punctually and Properly

Grass needs significantly more water during the summer, especially if you live in an arid area. General guidelines state that watering your lawn once every four or five days and allowing an inch of water to drench the soil is enough.

The best time to water your lawn is early morning while the sun is low. This will help seal the water into the soil and prevent it from evaporating. However, watering at night isn’t good for your lawn, either—since it will remain wet until the next day, it may promote the growth of fungus, which may cause infections and diseases in your family or pets.

You also won’t have to worry about fertilizing your lawn, as it’s much more difficult for this to be effective during the summer months. Water should be enough to encourage growth.

Ask for Professional Advice

Sometimes, even despite your best efforts, your grass may take a brown appearance—especially during the hotter and drier parts of the summer. Don’t worry: this is completely normal, especially for stretches of grass that experience high foot traffic. It will also bounce back to its verdant colour when temperatures dip.

However, when in doubt, be sure to consult a professional. Your grass may be suffering from more than a lack of water, and experts will be able to accurately diagnose your lawn’s problems.

Taking care of your lawn during the summer comes with its own set of challenges, but it’s nothing that a few tips can’t fix. You’ll be able to have a manicured, thriving lawn throughout the hottest parts of the year—and your neighbours will be green with envy!
